Christopher M. Klein, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge, Eastern District of California, and Chief
Judge of the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Ninth Circuit, earned JD & MBA degrees at the University of
Chicago, where he was Executive Editor of Law Review, and BA & MA degrees at Brown. He is admitted to the
bar in California, the District of Columbia, Illinois, and Massachusetts. Before taking the bench in 1988,
he was Deputy General Counsel of Amtrak, in private practice with Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in
Washington, D.C., and a Trial Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice. He spent 10 years on active duty
in the Marine Corps, was an artillery officer in Vietnam, and is a Lieutenant Colonel, USMCR(ret.). Judge
Klein spent seven years as a member of Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules of the Judicial Conference of
the United States and liaison member of the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Evidence.
