Judge Michael S. McManus
Bio
Michael S. McManus was appointed to the bankruptcy bench on January 11, 1994,
and was reappointed to a second term on January 11, 2008. Judge McManus initially
served in the Modesto Division of the Eastern District of California, then transferred to
the Sacramento Division. Through 2010, Judge McManus also served as a District of
Nevada judge, hearing bankruptcy cases in the Reno Division.
Judge McManus served as the Eastern District’s chief bankruptcy judge from
November 3, 2000 through September 30, 2008. During his tenure as chief judge, Judge
McManus was the chair of the Ninth Circuit Conference of Chief Bankruptcy Judges, an
observer on the Judicial Council of the Ninth Circuit, and an ex officio member of Court-
Council on Bankruptcy Judge Appointments. He is a fellow of the American College of
Bankruptcy.
Before taking the bench on January 11, 1994, Judge McManus was a partner at
Diepenbrock, Wulff, Plant & Hannegan, where he practiced bankruptcy law. During that
time he also served as Secretary, Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Debtor/Creditor Relations
and Bankruptcy Committee of the Business Law Section, State Bar of California from
1987 to 1990. In 1986 Felderstein, Rosenberg & McManus, a bankruptcy and
commercial law firm, in which he was a partner/shareholder, merged with Diepenbrock,
Wulff, Plant & Hannegan.
Judge McManus graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1975
with B.A. degrees in Criminology and Psychology. He received his J.D. from the
University of California at Los Angeles in 1978.
